In 2013, Harvard Pre-med applicants with a 3.5 GPA or higher had a 93% acceptance rate to med schools, whereas average acceptance rates that year were about 42%. Harvard College also offers peer pre-med counseling, where students are assigned to a tutor from their sophomore year through their senior year. Harvard’s Office of Career Services estimated that 17% of all its classes will apply for med school which is a large portion of the student body. 

Harvard also has strong biological sciences departments. A number of affiliated teaching hospitals are also nearby. These are ideal for clinical and research experience.

Every single Ivy League school is an incredible place to get an education, and there is no doubt that attending any one of the eight schools will open incredible doors now and in the future. With that being said, there is little argument to be made against the fact that Harvard is truly the cream of the crop.

Harvard is arguably the crown jewel of the Ivy League and is part of the “Big Three,” made up of itself, Princeton and Yale as the three schools that are arguably the most prestigious, most historical and most competitive schools in the Ivy League.

Harvard is the best Ivy League school for medical studies and for future doctors for a lot of reasons. In fact, the school’s Office of Career Services estimates 17 percent of any one of its classes will ultimately apply to med school after graduating from undergrad. On top of that, pre-med students at Harvard that achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher have historically enjoyed incredible success when it comes to getting into the top medical programs in the country.

Harvard has the No. 1 med school in the country and similarly has fantastic science departments. Additionally, there are a number of affiliated hospitals nearby where students can start getting hands-on experience from a young age.

The cost of Harvard Medical School’s first year tuition is $67,610 for the academic year 2022-2023. After taking into account fees, insurance and living expenses, the first-year tuition cost totals $101,218. Despite these numbers being high, HMS offers generous financial aid that is among the best in the nation. The class of 2021 had an average medical school debt (or $105,041) that was well below the national average at private and public med schools. • Health Sciences & Technology: HST, a joint program of Harvard and MIT, focuses on basic sciences and biotechnology. Students in HST (around 20% of each class) start their clinical experience later than Pathways students (midway through their second-year) and continue their research activities throughout their medical education. HST students must also complete their research thesis in order to graduate.

The name. Because of its name and connections, it is highly ranked. Although the education is comparable, it is in some ways less than solid state-operating medical schools. Your peer group will, however, be the most qualified candidates from Ivy League schools.

What does all this mean for you? HMS will allow you to be an entrepreneur in medicine or guarantee a subspecialty if you are interested in running the NIH. It doesn’t matter if you are looking to get into practice. You will feel that you deserve to be doing something better than what you do. You will think that are more than that. You will be content as a pillar in your community if you don’t do anything extraordinary at your state med school.

Harvard is a great place to go if you’re a POC (person of color). You will be able to gain influence. Consider the cost if you’re white, Asian, or of upper middle-class background. In general, med school quality will remain the same regardless of where you live. There are not many shit med schools in the US. It is all about prestige over commoner. It all depends on what you want to get from the experience. Good luck with your decisions. These decisions are not always easy.

Know that there are no bad medical schools

Harvard’s excellent curriculum, alumni support, research funding, great facilities, and high average GPAs and MCAT numbers are all factors that propel it to the top of US News rankings. However, all U.S. medical schools meet extremely rigorous accreditation standards so it is true that “There are no bad medical schools.” I recommend that students prioritize their applications based upon schools’ mission statements and curriculum, special programs, location, preference for state residents, and preference for states.

According to the MSAR from AAMC.org, Harvard’s curriculum places a greater emphasis on leadership, humanities, and ethics than usual. HMS is a great choice for students who are interested in these aspects of medicine. Other med schools may be a better choice for students who are interested in other areas.
