Plot Overview | Nope showtimes

The movie opens with the town of Arrowhead celebrating its annual “Summerfest” carnival. On this particular evening, the night sky is illuminated by a mysterious black cloud, and residents begin to experience strange and terrifying occurrences. The cloud slowly descends upon the town, and a giant extraterrestrial craft appears.

The film takes place in present-day Agua Dulce, California, where the Haywood family trains and handles horses for film and television productions. Otis Haywood Sr. dies after being hit in the eye by a falling nickel that they presume fell out of an airplane. Otis “OJ” Haywood Jr. and Emerald “Em” Haywood inherit the ranch, and six months later, they are fired from the set of a TV commercial after their horse named “Lucky” reacts violently to its own reflection. In order to keep the business afloat, OJ sells some of the horses to Ricky “Jupe” Park, who operates a nearby Western theme park named Jupiter’s Claim.

The Haywoods notice that their electricity fluctuates, and their horses vanish and react violently to an unknown presence. They discover an unidentified flying object (UFO) shaped like a flying saucer that has been taking their horses and then spitting out the inorganic matter. The siblings decide to document evidence of the UFO’s existence and recruit Fry’s Electronics employee Angel Torres to set up surveillance cameras. The UFO arrives a second time and abducts a horse named “Clover,” and the siblings attempt to recruit famed cinematographer Antlers Holst to help them record footage of the UFO.

Jupe introduces a live show in Jupiter’s Claim and plans to use Lucky as bait to lure out the UFO, in front of an audience to help reclaim his fame. The UFO arrives early and sucks up Jupe and the entire audience. OJ confirms that the UFO is, in fact, not a spaceship, but a highly territorial predatory animal. After the animal attacks the Haywood household by marking its territory with the regurgitated remains of its prey, OJ discovers that it does not attack anyone who does not look at it, similar to a horse’s reaction to its own reflection.

OJ devises a plan to record the animal without having to observe it. The group devises a plan to bait out the animal, with a field of electrically-powered tube man props to help them deduce its location in the sky. However, a paparazzi trespasses onto the field and is thrown from his electric motorcycle when it shuts down near the animal. Though they capture footage of the animal, Holst is devoured alongside his camera, forcing the remaining three to flee.

Angel survives an attack from the animal by being wrapped in a tarp and barbed wire, causing the creature to unfurl from its saucer shape to a jellyfish-like form. OJ intentionally looks directly at the creature, seemingly sacrificing himself and allowing Em to use the motorcycle to rush to Jupiter’s Claim. There, she untethers the park’s large helium balloon mascot of Jupe. The animal attempts to feed on the balloon while Em uses an attraction’s analog camera to photograph the animal before the balloon pops. With the picture as proof of the creature’s existence and reporters arriving nearby, Em sees an unharmed OJ and Lucky standing outside of Jupiter’s Claim.

The film includes various themes, such as grief, family legacy, and obsession with fame and wealth. It also includes elements of horror, science fiction, and comedy. The film’s character development centers around the relationship between the Haywood siblings and their journey to uncover the truth behind the mysterious UFO, which turns out to be a predatory animal. The film features a star-studded cast, including Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, and Michael Wincott, among others.

Themes and Inspirations

The movie explores themes of fear, paranoia, and the unknown. The UFO serves as a symbol for the fear of the unknown, and the characters’ reactions to it reveal their deepest fears and insecurities. The film also touches on themes of class, race, and power, as the wealthy couple’s attempts to control the situation reveal their arrogance and sense of entitlement.

Director Jordan Peele cited films such as King Kong, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Signs, and The Wizard of Oz as his main inspirations for the movie. The film’s neo-Western style and blending of genres is reminiscent of his previous work, such as “Get Out” and “Us.”
