All About AP Calc AB

AP Calculus AB Vs BC

There are two types of AP Calculus courses that can give you college credit in advance. These are AP Calc AB and AP Calc BC. AP Calculus AB focuses only on topics covered in a college-equivalent first semester calculus classes. AP Calculus BC focuses exclusively on topics that are covered in both the first- and second-semester Calculus classes.

In other words, the AP Calculus BC includes all the components of the AP Calculus AB and adds some additional contents. The prerequisite classes are similar for both these AP courses, as well as the grade that high school students usually take this course (grade 11 or 12). Do know that you can take AP Calculus BC without taking the AP Calculus AB course.

Calc BC covers two more units than Calc AB does. These are the two units:

Unit 9: Parametric Equations, Polar Coordinates, and Vector-Valued Functions11%–12%
Unit 10: Infinite Sequences and Series17%–18%

Is AP Calc AB or BC harder?

Is AP Calculus AB harder than AP Calculus BC? AP Calculus BC generally is considered to be more advanced than AP Calculus AB. AP Calculus BC is more advanced than AP Calculus AB. Both classes have similar passing rates on their AP exams. However, the material in AP Calculus BC builds upon material from AP Calculus AB which is a more introductory course in calculus.

Is AP Calculus AB hard?

Determination of the difficulty level of AP Calc AB is made on the basis of three key factors.

  • Pass rates of the students appearing in the test.
  • The contents of the course materials.
  • Personal academic strength of the student.

The pass rate in a particular examination can help the students to decide about the difficulty level of a particular AP test. The pass rate for AP Calc AB is 51% which is one of the lowest pass rates among AP classes. You can view AP Calc AB’s pass rate in relation to other AP classes’ pass rates here: https://blog.collegevine.com/ap-classes-ranked-by-difficulty/. Do know that AP Calc BC has a pass rate of 75.2% which is way higher than AP Calc AB’s pass rate. However, this is probably because students who choose AP Calc BC are more passionate about and better at math than students who choose AP Calc AB.

Is it better to take Calculus AB or BC?

If math is not your strong suit then take AP Calc AB or just honors or regular calculus if your school offers honors or regular calculus. Calc BC is faster-paced than AB because it covers two more units than Calc AB.

Overview of AP Calculus AB

The final part of AP Calc AB is the AP Calc AB AP exam which will determine a student’s understanding of AP Calc AB. Some colleges give credit if a student scores at least a 3 on the AP Calc AB exam, while other colleges will only give students college credit if you score a 4 or 5. The score range is from 1-5 with 5 being the best. Preparatory courses for the AP Calculus AB test are ideal if they contain algebra, trigonometry, geometry, and the elementary functions.

AP Calc AB has the following features.

  • It is a college level course.
  • You can enroll in it while you are in the high school.
  • Students usually have to complete pre-requisite classes like pre-calculus in order to take AP Calc AB.
  • The average pass rates in the AP Calculus AB test is lower than most other AP courses.
  • Aim of passing this test is to secure college-level credits.

Recommended prerequisites for AP Calc AB according to the College Board website:

Courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry should be completed successfully. You should be able to understand the properties of logarithmic and logarithmic functions, as well as how to graph them and solve equations that involve them. Additionally, you should be familiar with algebraic transformations and combinations, compositions, as well as inverses for general function.

More about AP Calc AB

If you are interested to appear in the AP Calc AB test then you should know a little bit about it.

  • The course is one of the advanced math courses.
  • It is designed to develop the capability of the students to go deeper into the math concepts based problem solving.
  • AP Calculus AB combines math concepts based on algebra, trigonometry, and geometry.
  • It empowers the students to solve complex problems using formulas and theorems.
  • You can use a graphing calculator for problem solving.

What does AB mean in AP Calculus?

AP Calculus is composed of three parts: A, B and C. AB covers only the first two topics, while BC covers them all.

The material in BC is easier than in AB Calculus, which includes a few additional topics such as polar coordinates and parametric equations. Both courses have the same difficulty level in math concepts and the paces are not too different.

Specific Contents of the Course

Here are all the units of AP Calc AB and a description of each unit:

Unit 1 – Limits and Continuity

You will learn how limitations can help you solve problems involving change, and how they can help you understand mathematical reasoning about functions.

Unit 2 – Differentiation: Definitions and Fundamental Properties

You will learn how to determine derivatives and apply limits.

Unit 3 – Differentiation: Implicit, Composite, and Inverse Functions

You will be able to use the chain rule effectively, learn new differentiation techniques and be introduced into higher-order derivatives.

Unit 4 – Contextual Applications for Differentiation

You will use derivatives to solve real-world problems that involve instantaneous changes and mathematical reasoning to determine the limits of indeterminate forms.

Unit 5 – Analytical Applications for Differentiation

After you have explored the relationships between graphs of functions and their derivatives, you will learn how to use calculus to solve optimization issues.

Unit 6 – Integration and Accumulation Of Change

You will learn how to use limits to define certain integrals, and how the Fundamental Theorem links integration and differentiation. You will learn how to integrate useful techniques and apply integral properties.

Unit 7 – Differential Equations

Learn how to solve differential equations, and use that knowledge to improve your understanding of exponential decay and growth.

Unit 8 – Applications of Integration

You will be able to make mathematical connections to solve many problems that involve net change over a time period and to locate regions or volumes of solids using functions.

Course Selection Considerations

There are some major considerations relating to the selection of an AP course.

  • You should know what the AP Calc AB course offers so that you can make an informed decision.
  • You must learn about the examination pattern and AP scores that would give you the college credits.
  • You should choose a course that is easy enough for you to do well in and also to get a good score on the test.

Who takes AP Calc AB?

Following are the common users of AP Calc AB.

  • Students seeking college credits for the first semester in the first year in college while they are still in the school.
  • Students who want less content to study than those outlined in AP Calculus BC.

In general, know that a student does not have to take the AP class in order to take the AP test. You can still sign up to take the AP test if you contact people at your school, but most schools make it so that you have to let them know at the beginning of that year that you want to sign up for an AP test for a class you aren’t taking. In this case, students who want to take an AP test without taking the class will plan to self-sudy that topic to do well on that AP test. There are a variety of test prep books for different AP classes and online videos and courses that teach you about the class so that you don’t have to take the class and you can this way you can get a ton of college credit before going to college, meaning you will spend less money!
